Electric vehicles that no longer have to accommodate a hot breathing engine under the hood are beckoning a new kind of designer to take advantage of their front-end grille pallets. Hella’s newest lighting system, the Phygital Shield, is under contract to go onto eight German luxury models in 2025 (names not yet revealed). The systems are not merely lightboards. Phygital allows for multicolored, sensor technology integration, radar permeability and even heating. It also represents Hella’s first foray into polyurethanes to give the surface an innovative self-healing effect, reacting with sunlight to return to its original state after minor damage from weather or stone chips.
