Magna International has begun shopping around a new concept that could change the component makeup of rear hatches. Magna’s “Breakthrough Lighting” model embeds LEDs into a thermoplastic surface that are “hidden until lit.” The lights can serve functional needs such as for braking and turn indicators, or be purely for styling and personalization. If embraced by Magna’s customers, the modular liftgate concept would clearly have implications for traditional taillight assemblies, including lenses, bulbs and wiring.
